DUG - U.S. Web Standards (Reminder)

Drupal Users Meeting - U.S. Web Design Standards

Hello All,

Kindly join us on Wednesday, November 1st, 2017 at 12 noon in 2115 Tawes Hall for a discussion on The U.S. Web Design Standards by Brock Fanning who is currently a Drupal Architect for The US Department of Justice. The U.S. Web Design Standards are a library of design guidelines and code to help government developers and designers quickly create trustworthy, accessible, and consistent digital government services -- and as of this summer, it has a Drupal theme! This session will include a whirlwind tour of the Web Design Standards , some extolling of its virtues, and a demo of the USWDS theme for Drupal 7 and Drupal 8.

Among the questions to be answered are:
  • What are the U.S. Web Design Standards?
  • What does it mean to “use” the Standards?
  • What are some reasons to use them?
  • How does the USWDS Drupal theme help?
  • What are the configuration options in the Drupal theme?
  • What does the Drupal theme look like, out of the box?
  • How can the Drupal theme be customized for a specific site?
  • How can the Standards be forked and used as a baseline for a custom design system?

We will follow up with a Q/A session and a possible demo of the website header generator.

Please use this link to RSVP for the event.

Lastly, The Office of Marketing and Communications would like to share with you the new University of Maryland websites header generator https://umd-header.umd.edu with the accompanying Drupal 7/8 modules. We look forward to your feedback and support in implementing it in your respective website portfolios.

Thank you very much and see you all tomorrow!
Michael Kamuiru

DUG - Twig PHP Template Engine (Reminder)

Drupal Users Meeting - Drupal 8 Media Integration

Hello All,

Kindly join us on Wednesday, October 4th, 2017 at 12 noon in 2115 Tawes Hall for a discussion on Twig PHP templating engine by Jorge Trasmonte with University Relations Business Applications. This 40min presentation will focus on the following topics:
  • Twig in GPS (Gift Processing System)
  • Templates and partials
  • Custom filters and functions

Business Applications is a unit inside University Relations that provides data analysis and reporting, business process redesign, technology training and web application services for the University Relations and the larger Maryland community. The web unit is charged with managing over a dozen web applications for the university like the giving portal for the University of Maryland (giving.umd.edu) and Gift Processing System.

The Gift Processing System (GPS) is a custom web-based application which goal is to facilitate the data entry and processing of gifts and donations accepted by different schools and departments across campus and processed by the gift acceptance department. The system aims at improving speed, accuracy, transparency and usability. The project involved converting a bunch of outdated processes, many of which were paper based. The application itself was built on the WAMP stack and was built from scratch following a MVC pattern where we separated the presentation from the backend. The backend makes use of custom classes and API's, and Twig to render the templates in the front-end. Most parts of the application behave asynchronously and make heavy use of JavaScript, AJAX, and API to submit, receive, and display data.

We will follow up with a 10min presentation of the Homecoming website homecoming.umd.edu and a 10min Q/A session.

Please use this link to RSVP for the event.

Thank you very much,
Michael Kamuiru

DUG - Drupal 8 Media Integration (Reminder)

Drupal Users Meeting - Drupal 8 Media Integration

Hello All,

Kindly join us on Wednesday, September 6th, 2017 at 12 noon in 2115 Tawes Hall for a discussion on Drupal 8 Media Integration by Susanne Coates (ARHU).

Seamless multimedia integration is absolutely essential to the modern website experience. Whether it's simply embedding media in pages or building entire media-heavy, Parallax-style websites, it is imperative that the CMS provide developers a robust media API and content creators an easy to use workflow. Along with the many changes that have happened in Drupal 8 has come a complete re-working it's media subsystem. Capabilities that were in modules under Drupal 7 have already / or are now being- moved into core and Drupal 8's "everything's an entity" philosophy now encompasses media with the introduction of media bundles.

This 40 minute presentation will:
  • Inform participants regarding the new structure for media in Drupal 8
  • Provide an overview of the changes to the API and frontend
  • Update on the current state of media-related contrib modules.

We will follow up with a 10min presentation of the Careers website https://careers.umd.edu and a 10min Q/A session.

Please use this link to RSVP for the event.

Thank you very much,
Michael Kamuiru
